All My Straight Friends Say | Sam Leuenberger

A poem composed of words cut from magazine and pasted on a black background: "All my straight friends say / the world was conquered by a girl / on / the / roof / with ultra long blond hair / She grew up in a small town luncheonette / forty miles east of Ronald Reagan's first chemistry set / her life a museum of embroidered boredom / with all the nights / inside her golden legs / autographed by August / she remembered climbing a water tower / and videotaping all the oysters in the hotel pool / where Shakespeare got dysentery and took a crap off the balcony / There's no way to duplicate the love of your life / Nobody can do that / it's impossible." A drawing of a white swan appears in the lower right corner of the collage.

Sam Leuenberger’s fiction and poetry has appeared (or is forthcoming) in Denver Quarterly, Cutbank, The Spectacle, The Collagist, After Happy Hour Review, Kallisto Gaia Press, and others. His fiction twice has been nominated for Best of the Net (2017, 2020).
